There's no doubt in my mind that the quality of education and the people whom your son interacts with plays an important role in your son's growth. However, to expect that your son's school will define his character is just as narrow-sighted and irresponsible as parents blaming video games to be the cause of a child's violent behavior.
The stereotypical Chinese parents tend to over-commit in terms of resources, stifling the child's natural growth, while their American counterparts tend to over-neglect, with completely unpredictable results. Why choose the lesser of two evils when there's a middle path?
