In the US, it's possible to continue this education even after you drop out; in China, we all know how hard it is to enter a college, finish up a bachelor degree, not to mention to drop out and get back there. The risk of losing the opportunity to continue your own education is much higher in China. That's why the parents are so concerned about their kids. What are they gonna do if they fail? Well, the article didn't say the Americans could still go back to school, finish their degree. They may not have such a glamourous job, but they could still have a life. How about the kids in China? Do they have such privilege?
It's not very responsible to encourage people to take the risk, yet not telling them what kind of loss they would get. It's not cool to laugh at those who are sincerely concerned about their own lives either.
It's true that many of the people it mentioned didn't have a college degree, but they all had some kind of college level education and probably a lot of time to think about what they really wanna do. More importantly, they all know if they wanna continue their college education, they can still finish it up later. Basically there is very little risk of the decision of dropping out will affect their whole life, unless you are in a very poor family like Steve Jobs. And being poor was the very reason Steve dropped out, not becoz of he wanted to start Apple to begin with.
