What a surprise! Right now I am also reading this book in the orginal language.
I would say the greatest influence on the Engliash language is Tyndale' translation of the bible into English durectly from The hebrew old testament and the Greek new testament. He hoped that by having an english bible he would be able to make a ploughboy know more about the scripture than a bishop.
some of the more famous English biblical phrases like" Am I my brother's keeper? the spirit is winnling but the flesh is weak, scapegoat, let there be light, sick unto death, flowing with milk and honey,ye of little faith, eat, drink, and be merry,stumbling-block,Jehovah,Passover, are from the Tyndale bible.
Tyndale paid the ultimate price by translating the bible into English. he was hunted down by Henry VIII's agents in Belgium and was tried for heresy. he was strangled to death, the body quartered and then burnt with the ashes thrown into the sea so tha he would be languishing eternally in hell. at the time the Roman catholic church and the pope only recognises the Latin bible so that only the priest could read from the bible.
