Performance and Appearance

Do you think which one is more important, performance or appearance?

In big companies, people wear suits. Because they focus on “appearance”.

In startups, people wear jeans. Because they focus on “performance”.

In the preface of “Founders at work”, Paul Graham said:

“The less energy people expend on performance, the more they expend on appearances to compensate. More often than not the energy they expend on seeming impressive makes their actual performance worse.”
