The two paths to success

Paul Buchheit, the creator of Gmail, offered his two cents on the recent WSJ article “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior?”.

He said, in the sight of many people, the path to success is to focus on being the person you are told to be, and put all of your energy and drive into fitting that mold.

But in his opinion, the path to success is to focus on being the person that you are, and put all of your energy and drive into being the best possible version of yourself.

His words remind me of Steve Jobs’ Stanford speech:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.

Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

It is surprising to see so many people don’t understand the simple truth.

Be yourself.

What’s the meaning of your life? This is the answer.
