Emily Dickinson的诗歌《My Life Closed Twice Before Its Close》

MY life closed twice before its close;
It yet remains to see
If Immortality unveil
A third event to me,

So huge, so hopeless to conceive,
As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell.

by Emily Dickinson (1830-86)

If you want to know of heaven,
    all you need is parting;
If you want to know of hell,
    all you need is parting.

所以对她来说death导致了immortality(这个词语也被平凡用于诗人的其他诗歌之中,eg.Because i could not stop for Death )。

离别,是我们对天堂体验的全部;

I stumbled across your site and I'm sorry to say I don't like your translation at all. Translating poetry is difficult enough at the best of times and Emily Dickinson's poems are such that they could mean different things to different people. For example you think the first sentence means that she lost two loved ones (closed twice before its close), I think that is too arbitrary and poetic characteristic of her work is somewhat lost by your putting words in her mouth. "closed twice" to me can mean any events of significance; certainly deaths are significant but it's not the only possible meaning. Someone else said heartbreak and you can't deny that certainly is a possibility too. Having said that, however I applaude your attempt but I think it's best to leave the original poem as it is until a better translation is found.

Parting is all we know of heaven,

And all we need of hell.

1,Emily Dickinson

Reading the original poem and translation is helpful
to understand the poem. Translation sometimes can help you to undersand the peom better and close to the meaning of the original.I like the peom which contains such deep meaning and let your imagination fly.Just do it you will be a poet yourself.

Actually I think poems can not be translated, if you do it, then the oringinal thoughts will be changed by different opinions. This poem is very diffcult to understand, for my part, I think we surely know that the poet has experienced two grieve deaths, which leads her think a lot about death, then we have the idea about immortality, also in the end we know parting.

I hope there are more people can share their idea about the famous English or American writers' and poets' idea!

Thank you so much for giving me this Chinese verse. It helps me a lot.
