伽利略的一封信

1615年，伽利略（Galileo Galilei，1564-1642）给托斯卡纳的一位公爵夫人写了一封长信。在信中，他解释了自己的立场。

当时的情况是这样的：长久以来，罗马教廷一直信奉托勒密（Clandius Ptolemaeus，约90-168）的"地心说"。到16世纪，哥白尼（Nicolaus Copernicus，1473-1543）提出了"日心说"。教会认为这是异端的学说，大力反对。

伽利略支持"日心说"，同时他也是一个虔诚的天主教徒，支持罗马教廷。他只是希望拯救教会，使她不要捍卫错误。

他在信中请求教会能够考虑：

实证科学的教授没有能力随意改变自己的看法，一会赞同这个观点，过一会又改为赞同那个观点。数学家和哲学家，与商人和律师不同。他们是没有办法被命令的，因为自然界或者神的被证明的事实，是不能随意改变的，完全不能像合同、协议或者汇票是否合法那样，可以容易地变更解释。

他还提醒教会，阻止人们谈论哥白尼的学说是很困难：

如果堵住人们的嘴就能消除怀疑的话，那是很容易做到的，但是事情没有这么简单。要执行这么一个决定，不仅需要禁止哥白尼的书，及其他持有同哥白尼相同观点的人的书，还必须禁止整个天文学。而且，还有必要禁止人们仰望太空。

If in order to banish the opinion in question from the world it were sufficient to stop the mouth of a single man,... then that would be very easily done. But things stand otherwise. To carry out such a decision it would be necessary not only to prohibit the book of Copernicus and the writings of other authors who follow the same opinion, but to ban the whole science of astronomy. 我模仿伽利略的这段话，不禁也想写一段话，

如果阻止人们访问某些网站，就能阻止真相传播的话，那是很容易做到的，但是事情没有这么简单。要执行这样一个决定，不禁需要禁止那些网站，及其他有相关内容的网站，还必须禁止整个互联网。而且，还有必要禁止人们思考。

最后，贴一下伽利略简略的年表。

1564年 出生。

1611年 罗马教廷认为伽利略有鼓吹"日心说"的嫌疑。

1616年 被传唤到罗马问讯。教会禁止他公开为哥白尼辩护。

1623年 新教皇继位，应伽利略的请求，重开讨论。

1632年 出版划时代巨著《两个体系的对话》，2月出版，8月被禁。伽利略被迫公开宣布放弃信仰。他被判在家监禁。

1638年 出版巨著《两本新科学》，确立了运动第一定律和第二定律，成为物理学基础。

1642年 去世。享年78岁。
